  • Let's Get Political

OK, so I brought it upon myself I guess. I friend of mine from high school who is now a youth pastor, made a remark on his facebook that if McCain/Palin get elected, he is moving to Canada. I responded that as a Christian, I'm scared for what might happen if Obama gets elected. This brought a scathing response from him about what a wonderful Christian Obama is, how he has always voted to support Christian principles, and that I was an uninformed voter basing my opinions on "urban legends and email forwards".

Now you all know me- I don't take being insulted very well. I was good though. I researched quotes and publicly stated policies first, and wrote a very polite reply back. I thought I'd share it with you, and would love to hear your thoughts on the issues:

    Hi Billy,

In regards to Sarah Palin, I would agree that she does not have as much experience as one would normally have for the VP position, and I know that that alone throws a lot of people off of supporting her. However, running a country is 95% dependent on your advisers around you, and 1% experience, and 4% gut reaction. Overall, I find that my political views and ideals align more with the advisers and leadership which would be placed by McCain/ Palin, rather than Obama/ Biden. It is not just the abortion/ gay rights issues, but also interpretations of personal freedoms, environmental issues that include good stewardship without extremism, the role of government in the private sector, etc. I really think that it is extremely important to have someone in the executive position who is not so full of themselves that they will not listen to the council of those around them.

I feel that the years have demonstrated that McCain is committed first and foremost to the good of this country. I don't think that's even a debatable fact. Obama though, appears to have established a track record of personal aggrandizement above all else. His "if you need me, call me" response to the deliberations on the bailout in Washington further demonstrated to me that he thinks about himself and his personal goals first, and the good of the country second.

I am aware that Obama professes to be a Christian, and it is not my place to rule on whether or not he has made that personal decision. However, I feel very strongly that a person's actions demonstrate the content of their heart. When he voted THREE TIMES to deny life saving treatment to babies which were born alive, so as not to "thwart the original decision of the mother" to "terminate the life of the fetus", I think that goes a LONG way towards where his moral compass is. You can debate abortion until you're blue in the face, but a child who is BORN ALIVE, and viable, and is then put in the basement room of a hospital to die because that was the original intent of the mother, is downright disgusting.

Obama has openly mocked those who are religious (April 2008 comments about clinging to guns and religion).

My comment about America not being safe for Christians comes from the fact that Obama supports a 100% separation between church and state. In fact, he has received the highest rating a politician can earn from the AU (Americans United for the Separation of Church & State), based upon his past voting record and current stance on issues. He supports even all mentions of religion being removed from the government (Dec 06), and also not allowing government funds to go to faith-based organizations.

Anyway, what I was saying is that the 100% separation of church and state, as well as the removal of everything religious from public, will open the door towards blatant discrimination towards Christians, and rob us of our most basic civil right to practice our faith outwardly and in public. I am not saying that he's going to start burning Christians at the stake, but his policies lend themselves towards the suppression of the freedom of religion in any public situation. THAT is a dangerous step for this country.

In terms of actual physical safety of Christians, my concern for that lies with Obama's multiple statements (despite Joe Biden's denial of it last night), that he would be willing to meet with the president of Iran without preconditions. He has said that we need to "work with" him, and that "Iran does not pose a serious threat" (May, 2008). This president, who has sworn to "end Christianity in this country". Who has ordered the public torture and execution of house pastors, converts, and even sympathizers to Christianity in his country. This is NOT a man that our country needs to be in bed with, PERIOD.

I vote on the issues which I feel strongly about (more than just abortion and gay rights- though I feel the basic sanctity of human life issue goes very far towards demonstrating one's character) and have voted for more than one democrat since I gained voting rights. I look at voter guides released by impartial sources and go with the candidate whom I align with most. Christian or otherwise. Period.

To quote my husband "that's the beauty of this country, is that it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about the candidates. All that matters is what I check off on my ballot when I go into my little booth". We'll have to agree to disagree on this one, but I would at least appreciate the respect that my opinions on the subject are well researched on my own, and not the spewing of "urban legends and email forwards"

  • Not Just a Fluke...

OK, so I am beginning to come to the realization that this whole Chessie-potty training thing is more than just a  fluke. We are now officially 3 weeks with only 2 poopy diaper accidents (and at least 1 poo per day on the potty), and an average diaper-per-day count of less than 1. When we arrived to the State Park in PA (at 12:30 at night), Chessie would not go to bed until she went poo-poo (how she describes whenever she has to go to the bathroom!). All through the camping trip, she kept up telling us when she had to go (and even told aunts, uncles, and grand parents, if we weren't around!). My little 17 month old even got out of the lake to run to the bathroom to pee! And on the ride back, she told us around Lansing that she needed to go. That girl held it for an hour until we made it back to GR, and then ran up the stairs to the potty as fast as her chubby little legs would carry her!

I  can't help but wonder if this will all fall by the wayside when her new  baby brother makes his appearance into the world, but for now, we are loving being a practically diaper-free household! Even if it is only for a week or two
